I. Papanin – Soviet Wintering Station on the Drifting Ice
Here’s the start of a series of posts about the Soviet Arctic. The Big North means something similar to the Soviet/Russian mind and the Canadian [which I am]. The heyday of the Arctic adventure was in the 1930’s, during the Era of the Plan. Along with the flights of long-distance pilots, and daring geologists, Arctic explorers rated high in ranks of Stalin-era heroes.
Ivan Papanin is twice Hero of the Soviet Union and received the Order of Lenin nine times.
